There are over 100 muscles in the back and each have different functions. Some help to curve (flexion) your spine, some arch (extension), some move side-to-side (lateral or side flexion) and others twist (rotation) your back.
Good spinal health allows the body to move easier, the nerves to carry the messages required without being interrupted by inflammation or tightness and encourages blood flow to all tissues as necessary.
To maintain a healthy and pain-free back we need to keep it moving in all the different directions; flexion, extension, lateral flexion and rotation.
Clearly, sitting at a desk does not help with this. But PILATES is a great way to improve mobility through your spine by moving in multiple ways.
If you would like to try one of our classes, designed by physiotherapists to improve your spinal health then get in touch or book online.
Alternatively, if you are struggling with back pain, a physiotherapy or osteopathy assessment might be a good place to start. An initial appointment will include a holistic assessment, making sure we get to the root cause of the issue, and provide you with treatment and a plan to get you feeling better in no time and avoid more problems in the future.
